In 1996 Intel engineer Jim Kardach was working on a rapidly evolving problem in the IT industry. Different companies were devising new technologies which could not communicate with each other.
Kardach experimented with a prototype system to allow these technologies to work together. Needing a name to describe this he looked to 10th Century Scandinavian history (as you do!). "I codenamed Bluetooth, after the 10th century Danish King," he later explained.
Who was Harold Bluetooth?
Viking King Harold I "Bluetooth" Gormsson did his fair share of marauding in the traditional fashion. But he also saw that unifying the various warring tribes of Denmark and Norway would be good for business. Working together they could shake down those rich Englandlers for even more danegeld
Mr Kardach just wanted that speaker to wirelessly connect to your phone. His Bluetooth company logo is based Harold's branding: using, H (ᚼ) and B (ᛒ).[34]
