Where does the word pundit come from?

From the Hindi/Sanskrit word pandit. 

Pandit/Pundit originally meant someone knowledgeable in the (Hindu) religion. 

Now generally refers to an expert in a particular field. Examples include: football pundit, political pundit, etc.
